Laser hair removal is consider as one of the permanent ways of removing unwanted hair. It is ideal to switch to laser hair removal if you want permanent results that you cannot achieve from temporary methods such as shaving or waxing. But before you go to the salon, you need to know a few things about laser hair removal to give you an idea about this procedure.

Laser hair removal is not appropriate for all types of skin and hair. The best results are often achieved when the treatment is used for people with light skin and coarse dark hair. This procedure generally targets pigmented tissue, so it doesn’t work well on blond, grey, white and red hair.

The most common areas on the body were laser hair removal is often used are the arms, around the lips, underarms, bikini line, legs, back and chest. This process requires more time and it’s quite expensive particularly when used on larger skin surfaces. It generally takes 6 to 8 visits to the salon/clinic to completely remove unwanted hair on an area. This will also depend on the hair and skin color, and size of the area.

This procedure works by passing laser beams through the skin into the hair follicles. The heat from the laser light destroys the follicles and stops hair growth. The skin is cooled down with a cooling device after or in between laser treatment. One session takes around 15 minutes to 1 hour, depending on the size of the area.

The most common side effects of laser treatment are swelling and soreness on the area which may last for a few minutes to few hours. There is sometimes lightening or darkening of the skin. Though quite rare, scarring, blistering or changes in the skin’s texture may occur. These rare and extreme side effects usually happen due to wrong techniques, incorrect settings of the laser equipment and inexperience of the person who administered the treatment. Make sure that you check if the clinic or salon is approved by the Healthcare Commission.

If you wish to undergo laser hair removal, make sure that you do your own research. Try to ask around about the reputation of the salon or clinic that you wish to visit for the treatment. You should also have thorough consultation for the pre and post laser treatment in order to ensure your safety and the best results.
